An editorial by Virginia Gunby and Chris Leman in the Seattle Times titled A green alternative for Highway 520 asserts:
"The Washington State Department of Transportation's two six-lane alternatives will cost at least $3.9 billion or $4.38 billion, by early estimates. Even its way-overbuilt four-lane option is nearly $3 billion. The Governor's Expert Review Panel says the money just isn't there."
They offer a scaled down "Green Alternative."
It certainly is more neighborhood-friendly (and far less expensive) than the proposed mammoth (extra-wide) 6 lane structure. The pavement/development obsessed politicos will no doubt dismiss anything that won't encourage a massive migration of new residents, but they risk watching the RTID go down in flames in 2007 with the current ambitious pave-the-region plan.
